Rail transport has been a major area of activity of ABB. In 2018 the company merged its assets with those of GE Industrial Solutions, thus reinforcing its high position in electrification products and systems in the world. It has been strongly involved in the development and modernisation of rail transport in Poland, cooperating on a continuous basis with the most important producers of railway rolling stock as a supplier of power and drive devices for rail vehicles. A large part of devices supplied by ABB, especially DC switchgear and rectifier assemblies, are designed and manufactured in Polish factories in Aleksandrów Łódzki and Bielsko-Biała, where more than two thousand Polish technicians, engineers and service engineers are employed.

Since quality and the optimum use of energy have currently become essential aspects, substations supplying railway lines more and more often contain reactive power compensation systems and active filters made by ABB. These are elements of the infrastructure preventing noise interference in the network. One of the most prestigious and spectacular projects in which the company has been involved recently was the construction of the Warsaw metro. The solutions delivered by ABB have worked perfectly, so the company will also take part in the expansion works on the second line of the metro. ABB will design, deliver and put into operation complete traction and power substations on the three final sections. They will be the main points of supply both to the traction system and to the distribution system covering all receivers at the stations of the metro and in the tunnels. Rail transport has yet another dimension for ABB. It contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and transport disadvantage of some regions as well as to promoting widely understood sustainable development. Such a symmetry between achievements in economic activity, rational management of the natural environment and social progress, is a part of the corporate strategy of ABB and, at the same time, an element guaranteeing the company’s success.
